29 November: Sea shanties at Greenwich

Three of us enjoyed an evening of sea shanties at Greenwich Yacht Club. The main band were the excellent Ballina Whalers, sometimes accompanied by the Shanty Choir. We heard songs such as “North West Passage” and “Fire Marengo” sung a capella. The Yacht Club is built on stilts over the Thames giving great views of the passing boats and the lit-up Thames Barrier. The room was unfortunately too small for the huge number of people who turned up so it was standing room only and a crush at the bar. We noted that all of the Shanty Choir and a large proportion of the audience were young, so folk music obviously still has appeal for every generation.
