22nd February 2015: Happy Valley and Chaldon

Transport problems meant the walk originally planned near Edenbridge had to be abandoned, so Dermot instead led us on a ten mile walk starting and ending at Coulsdon South station. We started over Farthing Down, then crossed Happy Valley to reach the Fox at Coulsdon Common — but too early for a stop. We then headed south on muddy tracks, but the morning was dry so we were able to admire the views north towards central London.

After lunch and a stop at the Harrow, the second highest pub in Surrey, the weather rapidly worsened and we were trudging through mud in the rain. We made a brief stop at Chaldon church to admire the mural, but sadly the volunteer-run tea-and-cakes in the vestry was not operating. We returned to Coulsdon along Happy Valley and Farthing Down.
